For Doug Heady, weather has never just been a job—it’s been a lifelong passion. From standing up in class to deliver the weekly forecast at just five years old to leading the weather team during his time at KOAM-TV in Joplin, Missouri, Doug’s love for meteorology has always been front and center.

Doug earned his Bachelor of Science in Atmospheric Science from the University of Kansas in 2002, but his career in television meteorology started long before that. At only 18, he landed his first on-air position at a local cable station in Lawrence, Kansas. With dedication and drive, he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming Chief Meteorologist.

His career then took him to KSHB-TV (NBC) in Kansas City, where he worked weekend and morning shifts before taking on his more recent role as Chief Meteorologist at KOAM-TV—a position he’s proudly held for more than 17 years.

Doug credits much of his success to mentorship and early hands-on experience. Growing up, he connected with Kansas City meteorologist Bryan Busby, who welcomed his curiosity and encouraged him to learn by observing in the newsroom. That mentorship helped Doug get his first break—and it’s a lesson he continues to pay forward, inspiring young weather enthusiasts to chase their dreams just as he did.

Today, Doug combines decades of forecasting experience with a genuine love for helping people understand and prepare for the weather. Whether it’s a sunny day or a severe storm, his goal remains the same: to keep his community informed, safe, and confident—no matter what the skies bring.

Beyond the forecast, Doug and his wife, Leslie, pour their hearts into The Christian Heady Foundation, created in memory of their son. Through the foundation, they passionately raise funds to support children and families navigating cancer treatment, offering hope and help when it’s needed most.
